The Meaning of Hacks and HAX™
So what are “hacks,” exactly?
One of our core principles here at Sacred Herbals is based on so-called “Life Hacks.”
You’re probably already familiar with some of these hacks: eating oatmeal instead of bacon-and-eggs for breakfast to lower your cholesterol. It’s simple; it works; it’s backed by evidence – results from clinical trials. And it’s not widely known, or at least not widely practiced. That’s an example of a life-hack, or really more of a “health hack.” And it’s just one simple example. There are more, and better. Keep reading …
But where did this term “hacks” come from?
Hacks … a Brief History
The term might remind you of computer “hacking,” or maybe “hacking” open a coconut with a machete. Those connotations are not very positive. But keep reading, it gets better …
Wikipeda defines life-hacking as “… any productivity trick, shortcut, skill, or novelty method to increase productivity or efficiency …” Already sounding better, isn’t it?
The term actually did come from the computer-hacking, originally meaning to break into computers and computer networks. For nefarious purposes. Vandalism. Crime.
Later, another definition was added by the code-writing crowd back in the 80’s. They used the term exactly as Wikipedia defines it: short-cuts to help improve everyday efficiency or productivity. Basically, the programmers would share short pieces of computer code as modules that could be swapped into various programs to easily perform some task … the code-hack was born. And “hacks” began to lose their negative connotation. Or at least to gain a second, positive definition.
That approach was borrowed from computer-hacks and applied to streamline and simplify our increasingly-out-of-control lives. And out of that movement – the life-hacking movement – grew some pretty powerful techniques.
You may be familiar with some of them. You probably even use these techniques yourself.
Perhaps the best known is the Getting Things Done method (referred to simply as GTD by followers), developed and popularized by David Allen. He has been one of the gurus of personal productivity for a couple decades now. Simple yet powerful stuff! That’s the essence of “hacks.” Another example is the Pomodoro time-management technique. And there are others, though less well-known.
Hacking Goes Mainstream
These techniques became popular and widely adopted. The term life-hacking became a bit more mainstream. The term “hacking” lost a bit of its breaking-into-computers-for-vandalism, criminal connotation, and the site lifehacker.org was born; now lifehacker.com.
