Fitness Milestones, Weight Loss … It’s An Epic Struggle.
And during your epic struggle to find your thinner self, it’s simply too easy to reward yourself with food when you achieve your fitness milestones. But of course, that’s self-defeating.
Successful weight loss and awesome fitness requires profound mental strength and discipline. The required lifestyle change is mentally challenging, too. You may become discouraged and demoralized if you don’t see big changes by the time you expect. And, it’s way hard! It’s true: If it doesn’t challenge you, it doesn’t change you. But don’t beat yourself up whenever you don’t make one of your goals or fitness milestones.
No matter what approach you take to achieve the NEW, FIT, YOU, there will be many failures along the way. Guaranteed. It’s inevitable. It’s life. Expect it.
But do it anyway. And do it again if necessary. Make it a HABIT … part of your routine, part of your life.
Keep this in mind: success lies on the far side of failure.
We’ve all seen those images that depict a fork in a pathway; or maybe it’s a split in the road; the sign points one way, saying “Success,” and the other way pointing to “Failure.”
That’s a crock! That’s not how things work. NOBODY gets to take the simple road, regardless of how simple it looks to others.
Remember this: the road rarely splits. When it’s something you want bad, it seems there’s never a detour around failure.
The path to success goes THROUGH failure. Success is on the far side. Accept it.
The only way to guarantee that you won’t fail is to give up … but wait … that’s failure. Don’t give up!
The sooner you fail, the sooner you will arrive at success. I’ve learned some interesting things serving as an advisor to a number of start-ups and biotechs. Regarding failure, a popular slogan in that crowd is, “Fail early, fail often, learn from it and move on!” They get it … success lies on the far side.
And instead of punishing yourself for those expected failures, be absolutely sure to reward every fitness milestone:
Rewarding yourself when you meet even a small fitness milestone – 2 pounds? 5 pounds? an inch? 4 more reps? half a mile farther? – will help keep you motivated, disciplined, and focused.
Let’s find some HEALTHY rewards that support your fitness milestones:
- Take a healthy cooking class
- Pamper your feet: get a pedicure (or a manicure)
- Buy something sparkly
- Pamper yourself with a spa day (or even a week!)
- Get yourself a new workout DVD
- Download some new workout tunes
- Weekend getaway – as long as it doesn’t include unhealthy eating

Remember to CELEBRATE even your small achievements!
Let the necessary lifestyle changes become rewards in themselves: start reading, join a local club (Thai cooking?), take up a new sport (inline skating, anyone?), or start hiking at your nearby nature preserve. These activities will be so much fun that you won’t think of your new lifestyle as a sacrifice. Your new activities will become habit. It is your destiny to be the you that you envision … healthy and strong. That is the NEW YOU that you knew was there all along.
