Here is a short collection of Fitness Strategies (Fitness hacks, or FitnessHAX™) that can help you live a better, more fit life, achieve your fitness goals – whether your goal is to lose weight, burn fat, or simply get in better shape so you can keep up with your kids.
Like other “life hacks,” most of these Fitness Hacks are easy and simple. Some may not apply to each situation, depending on your personal fitness goals. Some may only apply in certain situations, or for certain workout routines – like for weight-training, but not for running.
In general, the more of these HAX you can implement into your own lifestyle, the more of your fitness goals you are going to achieve.

- Clarify Your Motives
Be clear about your reasons … what will get you started on your fitness program? What will keep you going. Is your why big enough to keep you going?
- Be Nice to Yourself
If you miss a few workouts, or slip and binge on some crap food, acknowledge it. Accept it. Accept that you’re human, and move on.
- Eliminate Negative
Include people in this one: unfortunately, some of your biggest obstacles to achieving your fitness goals will be other people.
They may not want you to succeed because then they’ll look worse by comparison. Maybe they unconsciously want you to fail so they won’t feel so guilty due to not working out themselves. Maybe they’ll miss your company in front of the television or at happy hour. Whatever, it’s complicated: after all, they’re humans. Regardless, be clear about your goals; that you are going to do this, and would appreciate their support. If they don’t support you, they can stay away.
- No Television
The “average American” watches 5 (yes, five) hours of television every day!! And – big shock here – most of those programs are crap! Turn it off. There are many other high-value activities for you. Get up off the couch. Hit the gym. Go for a run. At least go for a walk.
- Cycle Your Intensity
Don’t go all-out all the time. Especially as we, ahem, mature, our bodies need a bit more recovery time. So don’t go at it full-force every day. Take a full day off every few days; or take a full week off every couple months. Alternate intense days with easy days. Lift heavy today; do cardio tomorrow. Run hard today. Long walk tomorrow. Avoid injury.
Like the hack above, cross-training will help you avoid injury. More important for me personally, cross-training helps prevent the boredom of doing the same workout all the time. For your overall fitness, the advantages of cross-training include distributing the intensity of workout around your various body areas.
Be sure to include muscle-building exercises: weight-training, strength-training, body-weight exercises. Why? Because muscle burns three times more calories than adipose tissue!
- Warm Up
Another hack to prevent injury, and maximize fitness results. Start with a brief cardio warm up, such as mountain climbers, burpees, or even the old standby from childhood, jumping jacks. Get the blood pumping, get your lungs expanded, before you launch into your intense workout, whatever that may be.
- More Protein
A diet higher in protein will help your body burn more fat. A diet higher in protein helps your body build muscle, and burn fat – it helps boost your basal metabolic rate (BMR). - Add Interval Training
“Interval Training” is alternating periods of high-intensity with periods of much lower intensity. For example, sprint-jog-sprint-jog, etc. Looking for different variations, search online for the term “interval training.” Or download our eBook (part of our FREE Membership).
